Manset view of Somes Sound - Southwest Harbor, Maine

Manset, part of Southwest Harbor, provides spectacular views of Somes Sound such as in this panoramic sunrise photograph. Southwest Harbor is a well-known boat building community on Mount Desert Island, home of Acadia National Park.

The view is north. Note the rounded moutains in the distance. This was caused thousands of years ago by glaciers, as much as two miles high, that sheared off the tops of the mountains.

There are over 20 mountains on Mount Desert Island. The highest is Cadillac Mountain. At 1,532 feet, it is also the highest point along the North Atlantic seaboard (see Cadillac Mountain panoramic).
