Stave Island
Five hundred acre Stave Island is on the western side of Gouldsboro,
Maine in Frenchman Bay. (In the image above, it is the long island
in the background.) Its eastern side has several sandy beach areas
that provide good landing sites for boats. The western side has bold
granite ledges that provide spectacular views of Mount
Desert Island. Stave Island has been a popular destination for
kayakers, sailers, and naturalists. It currently has a 45 acre preserve
owned and operated by the Maine Coast Heritage Trust. (The photo was
shot from Cadillac Mountain.) |
