Little Long Pond in Seal Harbor, Maine

Little Long Pond in Seal Harbor

A short distance west of Seal Harbor village is the beautiful Long Pond providing a fantastic view of Acadia National Park. As you head west from Seal Harbor on Route 3 just past the Stanley Brook Entrance to the Park, the pond and the mountain view will be on your right. You may miss it if your attention is on the ocean which is on the left so drive slowly. A Carriage Road is between Route 3 and the pond and runs north on both sides of Long Pond if you would like to go for a walk. Parking is very limited here. use extra caution when exiting your vehicle or doing anything beside it as traffic can come onto this spot quickly.

Location

If you are coming from the one-way section of the Park Loop Road, be on the lookout for Wildwood Gardens on your right. Immediately to the left is a turn off that goes south. This is also where the one-way section of the Park Loop Road changes to a two-way road. The turn-off on the left gowes along Stanley Brook and ends up oceanside at a stop sign at Route 3. If you take a left, it will arrive at a public beach (on the right side) with parking on the left. If you take a right at the stop sign, a short distance ahead is Long Pond. Drive slowly with caution as some people, children and pets may suddenly emerge from the brush. You may also arrive at Long Pond from the Northeast Harbor side. Note that Northeast Harbor and Seal Harbor are both part of the municipality of Mount Desert.

Coastal Community Living

Greg A. Hartford, photographer, author, publisherThis is a beautiful understated coastal community. However, let there be no doubt. There certainly is great wealth here, much hidden away behind forested and walled settings. At one time, there were even more very large stately homes, referred to as simple cottages at the time. But, the great 1947 fire wiped many of them out. There are a few roads that can be traveled where you can get a peak at some of the luxurious estates. One of the best ways to see them is actually from the ocean. Check out some of the tour services or even contract for your own captain and boat. That is the way to go. Southwest Harbor has a few.
