Echo Lake is south of Somesville and just north of Southwest Harbor on Mount
Desert Island, Maine, on the west side of Route 102.
It is a gorgeous lake with a maximum water depth of 66 feet. Echo
Lake Beach is on the southern shore and is staffed by a lifeguard
from Memorial Day through Labor Day. The beach has become the most popular
freshwater swimming site on the island for locals and visitors
in-the-know. (view Echo Lake photos)
When you arrive at the parking area you can't help notice the high
cliffs along the western side. These are part of 839 foot high Beech
Mountain (256 meters). The cliffs continue along the western shore
of Echo Lake as well. A hiking trail leads up the side of the cliffs
from the parking area.
To the south on Route 102 is Southwest Harbor (as mentioned above), plus Bass Harbor, Tremont,
and Bernard. The 102A loop will take you
near Seawall and Seawall
Campground.
The Island
Explorer Shuttle Bus has a pickup and drop-off point here for
those wanting to leave the driving to someone else.
