At 1,532 feet, Cadillac
Mountain in Acadia National
Park is the highest point along the North Atlantic seaboard and is the first place to view sunrise in
the United States from October 7 through March 6. It is one of over 20 mountains on Mount
Desert Island, Maine, that were pushed up by earth's tectonic and volcanic forces millions of years
ago. Were it not for the once huge glaciers that sheared off their tops, they would be even higher than
what we see today. Note the slopes on the islands in the distance to see the impact the glaciers had on
the land. The northside is on the left and the steeper slope or the down side is on the right. (See Cadillac

Cadillac
Mountain is actually in the city of Bar
Harbor, Maine, a rising coastal resort with a unique blend of local ambiance and rugged geographical
features. There is a wide array of activities
and entertainment, both nature based and community based. Much revolves around the coast and the National
Park itself. During season, there is a free bus service available to most important points on the and
several on the mainland.
Cadillac
Mountain is largely composed of pink
granite with forests of spruce and pitch pine. Views of Acadia
National Park from the top of the mountain are spectacular. And, when combined with tiny subalpine
plants (such as cinquefoil), squat, gnarled trees, wild blueberries, and various sized boulders, it is
unsurpassed. The Bar Harbor shopping district
is to the northeast. The Cranberry Islands are
to the southwest. During certain times of the year, visitors to the summit are the first to see the rising
sun in the United States.
The
winding and scenic road that
ascends to the top of Cadillac Mountain is approximately 3.5 miles long and was officially opened in 1931.
There are several small observation points along the way that offer prime viewing opportunities. Excercise
caution when getting in and out of your vehichle. During the 1880's, there was a slow cog railway excursion
to the summit. But unfortunately, due to a much faster descent than expected, it was short lived. (See fall
